There is no easy solution when you think about how to choose between Facebook and Twitter — or whether to choose any, among these, at all. The answer will depend a lot on why you want to use these applications in the very first place. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and you need to contemplate the consequences before forsaking one for the other. Basically, you need to take into account the following factors before deciding to either keep both or leave one application for the other:
Keeping in touch with friends
Facebook enables you to find your old schoolmates and keep in constant touch with them. You know what they are up to and they know about you as well. You share messages, information updates, opinions, videos, images and form communities. Twitter is more about incessant messaging and followed by instant replies. So, if your sole idea is about maintaining social contacts, then probably, Facebook is more suitable for you.
Making new friends
Facebook enables you to make new friends. Of course, your friend requests must, at first, be accepted. Here, people cannot communicate with you or follow you, unless they are your friends. Twitter on the other hand, creates a group of followers who read your tweets and reply instantly. Unlike Facebook, everyone can view your tweets, unless you block them.
Seeking opinion
Assume that you are an entrepreneur and plan to add some features to your products. But, you would like to know how people feel about your plans. You can tweet frequently and provide a link to your website. Check back periodically to see the responses of your followers. Twitter can be an excellent tool to get instant responses, especially, if you run a business. You do not need to stay logged in to see responses: just have an RSS reader. Facebook, on the other hand, gives less instant responses and requires you to stay constantly logged in .
Sharing business updates
Twitter allows you to type a message with maximum number of 140 characters, while Facebook does not impose any such limit. If you are a businessman and have just returned from delivering a lecture at a seminar, you can post the video taken at that time on Facebook for your friends. You can also post it on your website and tweet about it. In other words, Twitter enables the entire world to see the video.
It appears that Facebook is more suitable for a community of friends who like to share updates with one another. It does seem more personal. Twitter on the other hand, may be more suitable for businessmen and celebrities who want to stay in constant touch with their followers. However, that does not bar Twitter from becoming a tool of making friends there is no bar on people to use Facebook for business purposes.
